David developed a character of inquiring from the Lord. This is one of the reasons why The Lord referred to him as ‘’A man after his own heart.’’ He was a man whose decision making process was dependent on God. He was more concerned with what was in the heart of God than what he thought or other people’s opinions. He inquired from the Lord and hearkened to God’s advice.
In the book of 1Samuel 23 for example, David inquired of the Lord if he should go and attack the Philistines on behalf of the Kei’lah. He went after being given the okay sign by God which resulted in David’s victory against the Philistines and he delivered the inhabitants of Kei’lah.
In that same chapter of Samuel, we see David’s men advising him against going to Kei’lah but David being wise still sought the guidance of the Lord. Seeking guidance from people will many times lead one astray. I can attest to this as I’ve been a victim of being led astray.
In my previous article, https://jacquelynekanyi.com/2019/04/05/ignorance-is-never-bliss/ I explain how I fell victim of deception as I sought advice from men, instead of seeking advice from God. The time I wasted on seeking advice from men, was the opportunity that the enemy found to lead me astray and I was led to a path of pain and sorrow.
David also sought the face of the Lord for the battle strategy. (2samuel 5:23-24). David asked the Lord if he should pursue? and how to pursue the battle? God instructed him on the specifics. God gave the strategy for Jericho (Joshua chapter 6) to praise while going round Jericho. The result was Jericho walls came tumbling down. God requires the same from us. we should ask for the strategy so as to receive the victory in our circumstances.
God wants us to put him as a priority in our lives so He can lead us to the path of truth and to our victory in the battles we face in this life. He wants us to involve him in every decision we make. In every detail of our lives, He longs to be involved. Decisions concerning who to marry, job opportunity, where to invest in, where to serve. Any opportunity that life presents and requires us to choose, God wants to guide us on the best choice.
Involving God in our decision making lifts a huge weight off our shoulder although, Our human tendencies of wanting to be in control, blind us to this path of liberty. We are guilty of doing things in our own knowledge and then involving God when we face problems. This reminds me of a decision I had made in my past based on my knowledge. I got into a relationship with a certain man and instead of inquiring from the Lord if He was my husband, I had the audacity of inviting God to sign off on it by fasting and praying for him to marry me. Which never happened. I ended up wasting so much time and effort that amounted to nothing.
Benefits of Inquiring from the Lord.
We will posses the promise
On the day of testing in the wilderness, be careful not to harden your hearts. Inquire from God and follow his leading (Hebrews 3:7-8).
When we are going through the process just before the promise, the only way to possess the promise is by inquiring from God. When we wait on the Lord by seeking His guidance, he exalts us to possess the promise.
Psalm 37:34 (RSV)34 Wait for the Lord and keep to his way,
and he will exalt you to possess the land;
Increase the years of your life
Inquiring and Hearkening onto the counsel of the Lord will increase the years of your life
Proverbs 4:10 (RSV)10 Hear, my son, and accept my words,
that the years of your life may be many.
All that we need will be added onto us
Matthew 6:33 (RSV)33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.
The word of the Lord says that when we seek Him, it’s not in vain (Isaiah 45:19). All that we need in this life is found in Him and we will receive all that we need when we seek Him.
