She was a close friend of my family and was like a mother to me as she had been around almost all my life. I had looked up to her for guidance especially in spiritual matters.
She would visit our home regularly. Often, she claimed to have received a word from God about my family. We ended up forming a prayer meeting once every week. My mum, sister and I, felt spiritually inferior when we were around her as she seemed super spiritual. We reckoned she was our best choice to offer spiritual guidance.
One day I had a burning issue that I required guidance. I had just met this guy in my line of work. I thought that we were perfect for each other. I just needed confirmation from God if he was the husband, He had for me before I became emotionally invested. I explained to my mum about this guy and I showed her a picture of him. My mum made a face and asked that we should pray on it. Instead of seeking counsel from God, I resulted in seeking counsel from man as I went to this woman, who we prayed with, in the prayer meetings at home.
I approached her and I explained to her about my issue. I asked her to confirm if this guy was God’s will for me. She responded ”He is the husband who is meant to marry you. I can even see he has a good heart.”
My mum didn’t approve of this relationship as she claimed to have had a bad dream concerning him. I didn’t pay much attention to her claims. I desperately wanted the wait for a husband to be over. This woman’s response, suited my passions so I took it and continued pursuing this relationship.
2 Timothy 4:3 (ESV)3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.
I became emotionally attached to this guy. I had high expectations that he would marry me so I let my guard down and gave him my whole heart. Eventually, he broke up with me.
I confronted this woman on the word of the prophecy she gave. she responded with a question “Did he seem like he was interested in marrying you?” And I wondered in my mind, wasn’t she supposed to know as she’s the ”prophetess”?
Deuteronomy 18:22 (ESV)22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously.
I couldn’t believe that she was capable of deceiving me and causing me so much pain. I was so angry and depressed at what had transpired but really I had no one to blame on the outcome, but me. The enemy preyed on my ignorance. The bible had all the teachings and the principals of God. In fact, a common scripture was 14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers(2 Corinthians 6:14). He was an unbeliever, how then could he be God’s choice for me of a husband?
I was a casual Christian who lacked the knowledge of the word of God. At this point, it would be best to have described me as a churchgoer and not as a Christian. I rarely opened the bible to read. I only went to church because my mum went to church and it was a requirement for everyone who lived in her house.
However, this incident led to my resolution of seeking God for myself and only seeking and following God’s counsel. I committed myself to a relationship with Christ and not religion.
To avoid being deceived
It is thus imperative for one to seek God for yourself and develop a relationship with God so as to avoid being deceived. (Know God for yourself).
Stay in the word – This will help us to avoid being deceived. We are in a perilous time where there have emerged many false prophets and false teachers (Mathew 24:11) anything contrary to the word of God, don’t receive it.
In fact, we should be as the Bereans who were eager to know the truth and they could confirm every word they were fed by searching the scripture daily.
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Another thing, test the spirit.
1 John 4:1 (AMP) Beloved, do not believe every spirit [speaking through a self-proclaimed prophet]; instead test the spirits to see whether they are from God because many false prophets and teachers have gone out into the world.
In his book “How to be led by the Holy Spirit” Kenneth E Haggin writes, “Always remember that if a prophecy does not bear witness, or confirm something you already have, do not accept a personal prophecy.” He continues to say… ” Don’t marry someone because you were prophesied that he’s your spouse, don’t go into ministry because you were prophesied too, but rather get it on the inside of you for yourself. Then if a prophecy confirms what you already have, that’s alright.”
In today’s society, what kind of person will escape the deceptive path?
2 Peter 2:1-3
False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way, false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction. 2 Even so, many will follow their immoral ways; and because of what they do, others will speak evil of the Way of truth. 3 In their greed, these false teachers will make a profit out of telling you made-up stories.
We as Christians need to be able to recognize false teachers and false prophets in order to know when we are being led down a path that God did not intend. A person who draws near to God daily and reads the Bible each day is not easily deceived. The Word of God is Spirit. The word of God gives strength, guidance, and protection for the people of God.
